This is all totally new to me...just got my 5080 last night, and I've been able to pull a show off of it onto my PC via WinReplayPC. I see that this file needs to be converted before it can be burned to a VCD. Is there an easier way to do this in Vidomi? I saw a post that said that editing, resizing, and converting can be done in this program.....I downloaded it but I can't really figure out what to convert the files to for making a VCD.....I've got Nero for making the VCD's - what type of file should I use to burn? I'd love it if someone was kind enough to help me out - I'm a little overwhelmed with all this stuff. If it can't be done in Vidomi, is there another easy way? Thanks in advance-- I've really appreciated all the info I've gleaned from this forum.....

sorry for the repost, but it may be more applicable in this forum

Here is some good info to get you started. If you do a search on this forum for the programs you will find several links to them in peoples posts. The main programs you will want to start with are.

ReplayPC

WinReplayPC

DVD2AVI

TmpEnc (not sure about the spelling on this one)

Virtual Dub

Vidomi

After step 3, if you choose the vcd templet in Tmpenc you can burn the file to disk and your good to go with a VCD. However you will have to go on with the other steps if you want to edit out commercials. And as this will save you about 30% of storage space you probably will want to go ahead and take them out. I have tried to put down as much knowledge as I have gleemed from my experiances with these programs. But if you are still haveing trouble feel free to Email me any questians you have.

Note2adam@msn.com

And if you are having none POST your success so I know Ive helped.

Here is what I have found.

Step 1

Use WinReplayPC w/GUI to off load the files.

(note. It seems WinReplayPC w/GUI will choke on large files, So for movies and other high quality recordings I use the command line ReplayPC)

Step 2

Open the file with DVD2AVI. Then make sure Video---->Field operation----->Force Film is checked. Then click file------->Save Project. Make sure you click save project and not save .Avi.

(note you will get two files from doing this. a .d2v file and a .mpa file. The D2v file is the video and the mpa is the audio. In the file name for the mpa file it will say delay xxxms or something to the like. Make note of this)

Step 3

Open TmpEnc (if the wizard doesnt start automaticly start it) Select the D2V file for video and the mpa file for the audio. click next. check the box next to select source range. and inpute the delay number in to the fix audio delay gap box. (note when inputing this number if mpa file name says delay -126 ms that means you would want to put in 126 if it says delay +126 you would want to put in -126. I have never gotten a positive delay from Dva2Avi however) Click next through every thing else.

Step 4

Open VirtualDub open the mpeg that TmpEnc created set compression. I have been using the MPeg4 codec but you can use which ever (I think). This is the program you can use to select and delete portians of the show. you just select the start point then the end point and hit delete button. Once you have it all set up click encode. (I think) (I dont have the program right here in front of me but its a preaty easy prog. to learn. Once it is finished you will note that it created a .AVI file. and that this avi file is larger then the mpeg w\commercials that you got from TmpEnc. (this is not optimal) So on to step five

Step 5

Open the .AVI file with Temp enc and reincode. You will agian get a .mpg file and it will be of a manegable size.

Step 6

Watch and enjoy.

Notes

Since I installed VirtualDub, TmpEnc has not been acting quite right it has been freazing. Not doing batch encoding especialy. and It will no longer open the D2v and Mpa files. I am going to try to reinstall it.

Please if you try these steps post your results I would like to see if anyone has had diferant ones than me.

Also If you have a better way than this please please post. this prosses is very time consuming and tedious. And the programs dont play well together.

As for your troubles with Vidomi. I have only just barely started using the program myself. I am hopeing that I can just use.

Vidomi and VirtualDub in concert insted of all the steps above.

If you improve on my 6 step process above please post here or Email me. We are all in this together.

Hope you find this useful

Adam

thanks for the help - if possible I'd like to keep the amount of reencoding to a minimum (I've got an old PC and it takes forever) - I'll try fiddling with vidomi a little more (I did find that it looks like you can edit out commercials in vidomi - but not sure how yet) - I got a message from "bio" about how he's been doing it....

"I don't use any of the vidomi crop, interlace, or scale options. I use divx 5.02 2 pass encoding, and I resize it to 480x320 (maintains the aspect ratio). Also do normal psychovisual enhancements (a divx option), I do my 30 min shows as 200-230mb, and my hr long shows to be around 400. This is adjustable however you choose via the output size settings in vidomi, don't use the divx file size settings.

The 2 pass divx encoding will take longer than 1 pass, but it will ensure the best quality to size ratio, and will make the encode fit in the size you specify in vidomi if it is possible."

I am confused

When you say you use divx 5.02 2pass encoding. Do you get to that option in this manner

1 Open Vidomi Encoder

2 Browes to and select Mpeg

3 Options -------> Video options

4 Video codec settings-------> change to divx 5.02

If that is how you do it when I select the video codec settings drop down box. I dont get a divx 5.02 option. And when I try to encode any of the mpeg files from replay or any mpeg file for that matter I get a error (pops up twice) that says the codec didnt initalize corretly. Do I need to load codecs or do they come with the prog.

I am using vidomi v0.0469

Is that the same as you.

Cheers

Adam

I havent personally tried this, but I'm sure I will in the upcoming weeks. I just got my Replay yesterday. In any case, Nero Burning Rom has the ability to convert and burn to VCD in one step. I've heard that Replays mpegs are slightly mangled, so I'm not sure how it would handle that, but it might be worth a shot if 'easy' is of primary importance.
