Here's what's coming in the not so distant future:
Win32:
1) A completely revamped updater. The new updater will basically be it's own application. This means no more uninstalling then re-installing for the major builds. The updater has the ability to test file versions and download new versions when appropriate. Now, couple that with the automated db backup/restore function, once you have IVSm installed should never have to re-install it again.
2) Speed stats for all transfer operations. This goes for the downloader, sends and receives. It will also show an ETA.
3) A new "Options" page which will allow you to modify documented variables in the IVSm.ini from within the application itself. It will also allow you to backup and restore those options on the fly.
4) Some secret stuff. This might be potential for abuse, so I won't list them here.
Linux:
I have been working on the Linux distro and it seems to be working well. I am trying to make the base code as universal as possible. The plan is that as long as the base code has it's required OS proprietary libraries and applications, it should be drop and go not matter what platform it's on.
I guess it may be time to release it privately as an alpha, dunno yet. I have also decided to release the beta source code with the Linux distro.
MAC:
Is there such thing as PHP, PERL, and Apache for MAC? Dunno, but then again I don't have a MAC and probably never will. So if a MAC version is ever to exist, somebody else will be doing it. If somebody has the itch to give it a go, it might be a good idea to wait for for the Linux version to hit v1.0 so we have all the cross-platform quirks well documented.

Bob,
The major underpinning of the Mac OS is Unix. So Apache, Perl and PHP all exist. If you go to my webpage at: www.na9d.net, it is running on Apache and the visit counter was my first experiment with PHP. This is all running on a G3 Mac at 350 MHz.
So yeah, it should be very possible. If you can do a Linux or Unix version, the Mac should be very similar.
Now, there's two ways to do it. One is to install it like you would any Unix package and use a package called Fink to pull all the updated version of the public source stuff like Apache, etc. And since the Mac has compilers built into the OS, compiling source code is not a problem. So if you have a Unix distribution, it's installable on the Mac.
What is less trivial to do is to make it an "easy" install with a Mac installer and utlitlizing all the OS features to do the install. I'm sure there's folks that could help with that but that would basically be a script to do all the long hand Unix stuff for ya. Still I don't think it would be that difficult.

Agreed, that's good to know.
Still the issue remains that I don't own a MAC and I really don't plan on buying one in the near future. If anything, I would buy another PC to run Linux independently.
So... Unless there is some MAC guru out there who wants to spend time on this, there is not much hope.
The Linux version, on the other hand, will happen pretty definitely.

I am pretty experienced with php, perl and apache on Linux and on the Mac, so if you have some working Linux code I would be willing to give a try at getting it to run on a mac. I probably wouldn't run it on a Mac myself since I have a Linux webserver already but I do have a Mac Laptop and a Mac mini on my desk.
Chances are, it won't take much to get it to run on a mac since most things written in perl & php will run right out of the box on a mac...

Bob -
Any news on the Linux distribution? I'm willing to assist in testing/development/trialing...
Thanks,
Dave |
